What are affirmations?

The term “affirmations” has been thrown around a lot lately. You see it in Instagram captions, you hear it in self help podcasts, and you read it in blog posts like this one.

If you’re not completely sure what affirmations are yet, they’re positive phrases or statements used to challenge our negative thoughts.

If you’re new to speaking affirmations, don’t be surprised if you feel a bit ridiculous. It’s not exactly natural to stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself out loud, “You are awesome. You are sexy. You are a mother friggin’ masterpiece.”

But it’s better to feel silly now than spending any more time weighed down by self doubt or feeling depressed because you struggle to love yourself.

Do affirmations really work for self worth?

Affirmations absolutely work, if you want them to and if you’re patient.

Here’s the thing about using affirmations in general to shift your thinking and/or outer circumstances: They take time to work. You can’t speak affirmations to yourself once a week and expect to have a completely different life.

But with consistency and persistence, affirmations can and will work.

According to Psychology Today, “When properly formed, affirmations can counteract some of our negative thoughts and habits, resonating with the alpha brain waves and enabling us to achieve empowerment.”

In terms of using affirmations for self esteem, Positive Psychology makes an interesting point when referencing self-affirmation theory: If you want to boost your self confidence with affirmations, your affirmations need to reflect your core personal values.

Speak affirmations about things that matter to you, that you consider to be pure, good and important. Otherwise, there’s not much point in trying to shift your universe to fit something that either doesn’t relate to your desires or your strengths.

The point is to make the affirmations relative to you, your strength and your goals. Don’t repeat affirmations just to say you did them!

How to make positive affirmations for self worth:

Step 1: Make them specific to you.

  • Write down the goals you have for yourself, your mindset and your life.
  • Make them as specific as possible! The more specific you are, the more effective they’ll be.

Step 2: Write them down.

  • Write them in a journal, or on a post note.
  • Put it somewhere you can see it every day.

Step 3: Speak it out loud.

  • Start by taking 5 minutes every day to speak your affirmations out loud.
  • You can speak your affirmations any time of day, but I suggest doing it first thing in the morning to give yourself a positivity boost before starting the day.
  • Try saying the affirmations out loud to yourself in front of a mirror. So it’s like you’re having a conversation with yourself.
  • Gradually take more and more time to speak your affirmations, until you’re speaking them 5 minutes in the morning, noon and in the evening before you go to bed.
  • Try meditating on your affirmations! Focus on your breathing while saying them.

Step 4: Stay consistent.

  • Affirmations take time. Remember, they’re not a magical spell to undo all your bad thoughts and self negativity.
  • You’re re-training your brain and raising your energy to be more positive and loving toward yourself. That takes time.

Why do people have low self esteem?

Definition of "self-esteem" highlighted in pink in a dictionary

There are so many reasons why people like you and I struggle with our self esteem and feelings of self worth.

Many times, our feelings of low self esteem come from comparing ourselves to others, false realities and false beliefs, unrealistic expectations for ourselves, and hurtful past experiences that we still feel.

These things can all be overcome, but we have to be willing to face those things that trigger us to self-doubt, take the time and do the work it takes to get through them.

Self affirmations are one such way of doing that.

And now, here are my 42 affirmations for self worth and self confidence that you can use, alter or gain inspiration from to create your own. Make your affirmations personal and align them with your goals for yourself.

Struggling with speaking/believing affirmations for self confidence?

Woman looking at herself in a mirror, touching her face

Maybe speaking affirmations for self esteem outloud to yourself seems a little weird.

Do you feel a bit silly? Do you kind of feel like you sound stuck up for speaking so highly of yourself? Or maybe you feel like you’re just lying to yourself about things you don’t think are true yet.

Those are all normal things to feel and think, especially when you’re just getting started! But you gotta remember the reason you’re doing this.

You want to love yourself unconditionally. You want to think positive, self loving thoughts. But it’s okay if you’re not there yet. You’re not lying to yourself, you’re re-training yourself! And you’re speaking positive energy into the atmosphere around you. By doing so, you’re challenging the negativity in yourself so you can make the necessary changes.

Final Thoughts about Affirmations for Self Esteem

That wraps it up, lovely! By now, you know how to write your own affirmations for self esteem, some practical tips to make them more effective, and you’ve got a boat load of affirmations to practice and make your own.

Remember, friend. Take it slow. Learning to re-train your mind is a long process. Especially when it comes to seeing your value and knowing your worth. It’s okay if you don’t turn into the Queen of Self Love after the first day or even first month of affirmations.

My advice is to just keep at it. And play around with what works best for you! You might find that you practice your affirmations better when they’re on sticky notes on your bathroom mirror. Or, if you journal every evening before bed, maybe writing your affirmations and speaking them in bed will work best for you. Everyone’s different, and there is no “right way.”

That said, I would definitely suggest vocalizing your affirmations. Your words have energy and hold a lot of power, so it’s important to voice words and statements of positivity.

To get you get motivated, I’ve created 10 positive affirmations that are completely FREE. I’ve made them to be printed on your typical 8.5 x 11 inch paper, but you can resize them if you want. Get your positive affirmations here!

Now take some time to sit quietly and recognize the thoughts going through your mind. Where do you need more self esteem? In what areas are you doubting yourself? Use the steps I mentioned above to turn those negative thoughts into powerful mantras. Use them to empower yourself and verbally remind you how freakin’ awesome you actually are.

Til next time, you hot tamales.
